deviation, magnetic—The angle by which a compass on board ship or aircraft deviates from magnetic north as a result of instrumental error and (chiefly) the magnetic effects of the ship of aircraft and its contents. The deviation depends on the ship’s heading and also on the magnetic dip and intensity.
